Press Release
Thessaloniki, 10 March 2014
Creating work for the young in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain:
“This initiative could not have come at a better time”, says Martin Schulz, European Parliament’s President
On 14 March 2014, young Greek and Portuguese people with the Intercivil Society (London) will launch their initiative to create jobs for young people in southern Europe and offer safe, sunny and affordable retirement to senior citizens from other European countries. To be launched at the Thessaloniki City Library at 5.30 pm local time, the ProWork initiative will be a new tool for “young Europeans’ solidarity across generations for work creation”, as the sub-title of ProWork says.
ProWork is launched Europe-wide by the Intercivil Society and its local youth entities, the ThessaloWiki group and ProWork Portugal, with partnership and support from the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Ioannis Boutaris, the ICLS (Rome) and the Career Services Office of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The event is held as part of the ‘Thessaloniki European Youth Capital 2014’ programme.
“This initiative could not have come at a better time”, said in a recorded video message Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament who has granted the high patronage of the European Parliament to the launch event.
Mayor Boutaris will open the launch event, followed by a message from Martin Schulz. Greek and Portuguese youth with the President of the Intercivil Society will introduce the initiative and its state of development in Greece and Portugal.
Finally, three European calls will be announced:
· To young southern Europeans to join the initiative and create the work they need for themselves,
· To senior citizens in European countries to retire in the south and enjoy the sunny winters, the services offered by young southern Europeans and the possibility of creating new cross-generational start up ventures, and
· To European institutions and governments to support this unique and promising initiative by young southern Europeans.
“ProWork will be creating jobs for young unemployed people so that they do not have to leave their own countries in search of a job. It will also offer safe and affordable retirement for senior citizens from less sunny European countries and create new trust, new prosperity and a new, intergenerational way of life in Europe”, summarized Geza Tessenyi, President of the Intercivil Society.
